Two blackjack players who lost big money over the years playing blackjack at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida, have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to get their money back.

The casino is sitting in a legal gray space at the moment. According to the Florida Supreme Court, the table and card games offered by the casino are illegal. The Seminole tribe, on the other hand, insists that the Department of Interior ruled that their games are legal.

The lawsuit, headed by attorney Michael Trentalange, is siding with the Supreme Court. In fact, the entire lawsuit rests on the games being illegal. Trentalange is appealing to a law from the 1930s that gives gamblers the ability to recover their losses if it is made clear that the gambling that was done was in violation of the law.

The two players that Trentalange represents are seeking to recover losses of about $15,000. Interestingly, since the Seminole tribe is a sovereign nation, they cannot be the target of a lawsuit. Instead, the case is going after other parties, including Clear Channel Outdoor for promoting blackjack at the casino, Bally Technology which helps keep track of players’ wins and losses, and Chipco International which manufacturers the chips that the Hard Rock casino uses.

The lawsuit already has its critics, and many think it simply won’t work. Trentalange and his clients, however, remain confident.
