27-strong syndicate of dayshift workers from SSI Steel in the North East gets lucky with a GBP 1 million jackpot.

A 27-person syndicate from Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) in the North East won a GBP 1 million prize in the EuroMillion UK Millionaire Raffle on New Year’s Eve. The wins followed closely after a 30-person group from SSI won GBP 288,743,010 in the EuroMillions in September.

The aptly-named group “Balls of Steel” is compiled of members of the dayshift at SSI Steel in Redcar, Teesside. Syndicate leader Mark Richardson discovered the win while checking tickets on New Year’s Day.

The father of two couldn’t believe his eyes when he called the National Lottery for confirmation. He told reporters: “It was really nerve wracking calling The National Lottery as I thought they were going to say I hadn’t won. But after confirming the details they said we had won GBP 1m.”

So what of the winnings?

Each member of “Balls of Steel” will pocket GBP 37,037 and many are looking forward to treating themselves and their families to new cars, watches and holidays. It looks like the smart strategy of buying tickets in bulk and splitting the winnings paid off.

The lucky ticket was purchased at a Spar in Nunthorpe, Teesside. The syndicate have been buying EuroMillions tickets for two years, and after this recent jackpot is likely to continue in the future. Despite the growing popularity of games like online blackjack, this group prefers to chase prizes the old-fashioned way.
