Casinos Using Microgaming Software Will Not Accept New US Players
In a sudden and surprising turn of events, Microgaming has announced that all casinos using its software can no longer accept new players from the US. This is a big blow to the online gaming industry, and will affect Blackjack players especially, since Microgaming offers more Blackjack variations than any other software. What is the reason for this new rule? Well, it ultimately stems from the recent actions of Kentucky governor Steve Beshear and his loose interpretation of Kentucky law.
In the state of Kentucky, the law allows the governor to seize any implements used in “illegal” gambling. Because Kentucky is big in horse racing, Beshear saw internet gambling as competition, since money spent at online casinos ends up out of state. With the help of the Franklin Circuit Court, Beshear used this law to seize 141 internet gambling sites. His actions have been met by severe criticism, but he isn’t backing down, so Microgaming had to take the defensive.
At first, Microgaming just blocked players in Kentucky, then a bit later, in neighbouring states, just as a preventative measure. But before long, word got out that Beshear wanted to seize Microgaming.com, the website of the world’s largest internet gaming software provider. Microgaming then decided that in order to protect themselves and the casinos that use their software, those casinos would no longer be allowed to accept new US players.
US players with current accounts at Microgaming-powered casinos will be able to keep their accounts, but no new accounts will be created from US players. Casinos using RealTime Gaming, Vegas Technologies and Rival Gaming software still accept US players – you may find a list of recommended sites here.
