Fake Chips and Biker Brawls Plague Aussie Casino
Sydney’s Star City Casino is not happy with its current image. Fights, cheating, and fraud have plagued the casino in recent months, and casino owners have had enough. They are now planning a $640 million overhaul next year in order to clean things up.
Right now, Star City runs about 1200 video cameras to keep an eye on things. The overhaul will see this number increased by 50%, bringing the total closer to 1800. The reason for the increased security is that the number of incidents reported for 2009 – mostly cheating and thefts – has doubled over the last year.
A spokesperson defends the numbers, insisting: “We don’t believe there’s been a rise in crime. There has been an increase in the number of criminals apprehended.”
Regardless of the numbers, the casino feels the need to launch a full-scale attack. Players are stealing chips, using fake chips, and getting into fights. Last year a “bikie group” instigated a massive glass-smashing brawl, which caused quite a stir. It is hoped that an overhaul will change the casino’s image.
“If people feel safe, they’re more likely to come to Star City,” said the spokesman.
