Newcastle Granddad Murdered Over Winning Betting Slips
A win at horseracing led to a savage murder in Newcastle, when heavy drinking celebrations caused a row.
A granddad in Newcastle bet a couple of pounds on his favorite horses at one of many William Hill betting shops in the city. Little did he know that he will be later viciously murdered by a pair of drunkards looking to collect his small winnings.
Steven Youll was savagely beaten to death by Michael Wait and his accomplice David Smith. The pair then went through the granddad’s pockets to collect the uncashed betting slips. They wasted no time in cashing GBP 178, GBP 72, and GBP 4 horserace betting slips. Apparently, the money was spent on booze shortly after.
After a thorough investigation and swift action by the police, the pair was apprehended and later jailed for life. Jurors in the trial couldn’t been told how Wait stole the betting slips from Youll, as the judge ruled this evidence could prejudice the case. However, the murderers were convicted anyway.
Could the murder have been avoided?
Prosecutor, Neil Davey QC, referred to Michael Wait’s actions when he told reporters: “In order to do that he must have known what he was looking for.” If only Steven Youll had used mobile sports betting tools to wager on horses. He wouldn’t have to leave his house even, not to mention being beaten to death for the betting slips.
Wait didn’t cash the slip at William Hill’s branch in Westgage Hill where the bet was actually placed. He knew the staff there were familiar with Steven Youll. Instead he went to a different branch and cashed the GBP 72 slip right away. But he couldn’t do so with the GBP 178 slip, and was told to go to the branch that accepted the wager.
What makes things even worse, Youll and Wait were pals. They were celebrating Youll’s win at Wait’s home, and after a night of drinking a heavy row broke out between them. The pair went outside to settle the differences and later joined by Smith. Together, Wait and Smith left Youll with 71 injuries leading to his death.
Responsible drinking and responsible gambling are ultimate advices for any gamer. And it doesn’t hurt to use the latest technological advances to avoid these kinds of situations either.

What you wrote is bollox to get people to use online gambling!
Steven was my uncle as well as my best friend!
He was killed solely for the reason to take his tickets from him by two drug addicted pieces of shit!
The 16 years each they received in my eyes is not enough!
We need to bring back hanging for people like that!
You yourself are just as bad and should be ashaimed of youself for using his death to promote online gambling!
Hi Scotty,
First of all, if Steven was actually your friend and relative let us express our deepest condolences. Crimes like this should not happen.
Regarding our article, if you read it again, you will not find any solicitation to gamble, use drugs or kill people for money. We are simply informing people that such a tragedy occured and in fact this article is trying to figure out how this crime could be avoided and is giving advice to others how not to become a victim. Being affected by this crime, you of all people should wish that others be properly warned and better prepared.
Tying our news article to a drug-related robbery commited by drunk criminals is as fare as saying that local TV Channel’s report on this crime was used to promote diapers (or whatever they had in their advertising block which followed the news).
We are sorry about your uncle, we are sorry that you have misunderstood us and we understand that you are angry now. But it was not gambling that led to the attack, these people did not have gambling addiction, they did not use this money for gambling, so this one time the problem is not to be found in the gambling community (ourselves and our readers), but lies somewhere else.
Yes he was my uncle! Your statment “And it doesn’t hurt to use the latest technological advances to avoid these kinds of situations either” is encouraging people to use online gambling rather than bookmakers etc by scaremongering USING my family’s tragedy and loss to your advantage! This is in my eyes very wrong of you!
Hi again Scotty,
Actually, you do have a point there – if winnings would have been on an e-account, there would be nothing to kill for. Same as with cash vs. credit card. So yes, in these kind of situations placing bets online seems to be a safer solution then walking around trying to cash your slip and then start drinking having cash lying around.
Please note that in the same paragraph our writer also stated that: “Responsible drinking and responsible gambling are ultimate advices for any gamer.” These where the only pieces of advice that he gave.
Let us stress once agian – we are not profiting from this tragedy. Not in any other way as any news provider in the world, be it a TV channel, news website or radio station. We provide news. And we cater to online gambling community, whether you personally like or dislike people betting online and offline. Nothing in this article solicited our readers to do anything illegal, immoral or in fact solicited to do anything at all except for advising to gamble and drink responsibly and trying to figure out how this tragedy could be avoided.
As we said earlier, we understand that you are angry, but maybe your anger should be taken somewhere else, for instance to your local community which failed to stop these drug addicts in time before they commited a murder. In any case let us express our condolences once again to you and your uncle’s friends and relatives and belive us – we are not here to make money on anybody’s death.
