Pennsylvania Universities Threatened by Blackjack Fiasco
The US state of Pennsylvania has been struggling in recent months trying to decide what to do with a proposal to legalize table games such as blackjack in the state’s slot casinos. The bill received senate approval last week, but floundered when it reached the house. There are still a few weeks left to save it, but its future remains uncertain.
The real problem, however, is that Pennsylvania state governor Edward Rendell already spent the $250 million in “expected” tax revenue that would be generated if the bill were to pass. This tax money is earmarked to go to the state’s universities, which have been waiting for state funding since June of last year.
“It is my understanding that we have all agreed that the Legislature will return on January 5, 2010 to hammer out an agreement,” says Rendell. He warned legislators that if the bill does not pass, thousands of Pennsylvanian workers may lose their jobs.
While politicians quibble over the issue of casino blackjack in Pennsylvania, locals can still play blackjack online. Despite what many say, online gambling in the US is still legal.
