Old GPU for the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa
Exynos 5 Octa GPU

The Samsung Exynos 5 Octa SoC will not feature a new GPU, relying on good old PowerVR.

Samsung didn’t treat mobile casino fans to brand new smartphones at this year’s CES, but the Korean giant has instead announced the Exynos 5 Octa chipset, read more in our Samsung Exynos 5 Octa Chipset Officially Unveiled piece.

Although the chipset announcement compensates the absence of new devices, Samsung has also failed to mention which GPU will be included in the new SoC. Now, we have rumors of the PowerVR SGX 544MP3 making its way onto the new chipset.

The PowerVR SGX 544MP3 is one generation younger than the GPUs found in the Apple’s A5/A6 chipsets – the 533. The new GPU offers mobile casino games fans most of the same features plus DirextX10 capabilities and twice as fast triangle setup.

However, the PowerVR SGX 544MP3 is far less powerful than the 554MP4 found on Apple’s next gen chipsets – the A6X. This means that the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa GPU will be delivering a performance in between the third and fourth generation iPad casino GPUs. We sincerely hope that the power features of the new SoC will compensate the “old” GPU.

It remains a mystery why Samsung didn’t use the brand new Mali-T604 GPU for the Exynos 5 Octa. This GPU has made its way to the Exynos 5 Dual and works fine there.
