CES 2013 was very fruitful when it came to new chipsets, ST-Ericsson followed the footsteps of Samsung, Qualcomm and NVIDIA to introduce the new NovaThor SoC.
ST-Ericsson confirmed the trend for better, faster, and smaller chipsets, when the manufacturer introduced its brand new NovaThor chipset at CES 2013 – the L8580. The announcement followed the new chipsets by Samsung, Qualcomm and NVIDIA.
The new chipset will be powering mobile casino games with a low-power eQuad processor featuring four Cortex-A9 cores, which can be clocked up to 2.5GHz to provide enormous speed and power. The new chipset will also feature the PowerVR SGS544 GPU and the possibility to run at just 0.6V saving precious battery.
Naturally, the new NovaThor L8580 will be able to support 1080p video and screen resolutions of up to 1920×1200 allowing users to enjoy the creme de la creme of Android casino games. In the camera department, the new SoC will support smartphones with primary snappers of up to 20MP and secondary cameras of up to 5MP.
The NovaThor L8580 chip also supports LTE HSPA+ connectivity, as well as TD-SCDMA and EDGE radios. Support for 3D reproduction and capture is also built-in.
The new chipset will be perfect for mid-range smartphones, which will potentially combine great power with decent battery life. Although the top-line devices will probably move towards the Cortex-A15 designs, there will be plenty of opportunities for smartphone manufacturers to utilize the ST-Ericsson NovaThor L8580 chipset.
