Truck Driver Invents a Better Blackjack Game
Larry Cockrell used to drive a concrete trucks for a living, while spending his spare time perfecting the rules of a new blackjack style card game he calls “Quick Seven”. His truck driving days are over, and now Cockrell runs a company called Innovative Gaming which he uses to market the new game.
The objective of Quick Seven is to come as close to seven without going bust. Cards are counted slightly different than in regular blackjack, and there are different rules for hitting and standing, but the most important feature of the game is that it allows players to discard a card from their hand while trying to beat the dealer.
“In blackjack, the No. 1 exciting thing is getting a blackjack, which happens approximately once in 20 hands,” Cockrell says. “In ‘Quick Seven,’ the most exciting thing happens once every 13 hands or so, which is 53.8 percent more often than in blackjack.”
Quick Seven is now available as an iPhone app, and will soon be offered in several Vegas casinos. It has not yet been licensed to online blackjack casinos, so players without iPhones won’t be able to play it electronically, but if the game is as popular as Cockrell thinks it will be, it may soon show up alongside other great blackjack variations like Spanish Blackjack, Pontoon, and Perfect Pairs.
